The Chinese authorities have charged another veteran human rights activist with attempting to subvert the state, the latest in a series of indictments or trials of well-known dissidents that have brought unusually stiff prison sentences and widespread condemnation abroad.
One year ago, on November 28, 2010, five major newspapers including The New York Times and The Guardian simultaneously published the first 220 of 251,287 confidential US diplomatic cables collected by the whistle-blower organization known as WikiLeaks. An international group of online hackers is warning a Mexican drug cartel to release one of its members, kidnapped from a street protest, or it will publish the identities and addresses of the syndicate’s associates, from corrupt police to taxi drivers, as well as reveal the syndicates’ businesses.
