Citizen Lab’s new report, The Canadian Connection: An investigation of Syrian government and Hezbullah web hosting in Canada was featured in numerous media, including the Globe and Mail. The report noted that web hosting operations raise legal questions because they may violate Canadian and U.S. sanctions against Syria.
As the report states, several Syrian government sites are hosted by a Montreal-based company called iWeb. When the Globe and Mail contacted iWeb about the new Citizen Lab report, iWeb responded saying the company never discloses any information about the identity of its clients unless compelled to do so by law.
“We had a moral obligation to report this given the violence in Syria,” Citizen Lab Director Ron Deibert said in a media interview.
Professor Deibert was also interviewed on CBC Metro Morning with Matt Galloway. The report’s findings were also covered by CBC News, The Associated Press, and The Washington Post.
