Following RightsCon, EngageMedia engaged with an emerging network of digital rights activists in Indonesia. On September 28, 2015, EngageMedia met with SAFENET, an Indonesian digital rights advocacy group for a round-table discussion on privacy issues. Participants noted that the risks of releasing personal information online were not adequately understood. Strategies on how to improve awareness were shared. EngageMedia’s presentation on privacy was followed by review of the draft privacy legislation in Indonesia. The session highlighted the problematic elements of the bill, including provisions that allow authorities to conduct surveillance without court orders, such as tracking, digital conversation tapping, and data retention.
