Security Planner

ResearchTools & Resources

It shouldn’t be hard to stay secure online—which is why the Citizen Lab launched Security Planner, a free website for personalized digital security recommendations you can trust.

Security Planner provides recommendations on implementing basic online practices, like enabling two-factor authentication on important accounts, making sure software stays updated, and using encrypted chats to protect private communications. More advanced users can receive advice on where to go for more help.

Security Planner is designed to make it as easy as possible for an “average” Internet user to get expert-reviewed advice, in a friendly, personalized format that you can implement quickly and easily. It is intended for individuals, and is not designed for higher-risk users or to address organizational security problems.

Security Planner joins Consumer Reports

When Security Planner was first released in 2017, we promised regular updates, new features, and translations into other languages. To ensure we can continue to deliver on that promise for years to come, Security Planner  has joined Consumer Reports (CR) Digital Lab.

Released in October 2020, CR Security Planner has a fresh new look and new recommendations that cover everything from smart speakers to connected cameras.
