Moving Beyond the Given
The Politics of Categories and Subjectivity in Indonesia
This event is hosted by the Association for Asian Studies
On March 13, join senior researcher Irene Poetranto as she speaks on the “Moving Beyond the Given: The Politics of Categories and Subjectivity in Indonesia” panel at the Association for Asian Studies 2026 conference in Vancouver.
The discussion will focus on the use of digital technologies to identify and suppress dissent among minority groups in Indonesia and examine how government authorities work with information intermediaries to deploy surveillance systems and monitor and block online content. She will explore the impact of digital repression on freedom of expression, assembly, and association, particularly among ethnic and religious minorities, outlining how these communities are resisting such practices.
Poetranto is also organizing a panel titled “Repression and Representation: Indonesia’s Pluralism Challenges” on March 15.
