On 27 March, Google’s Shane Huntley and Citizen Lab Senior Researcher Morgan Marquis-Boire co-authored a presentation at BlackHat Asia 2014 in Singapore on the targeting of journalists by government surveillance. BlackHat Asia took place from 25-28 March, 2014.

The briefing was titled, Tomorrow’s News is Today’s Intel: Journalists as Targets and Compromise Vectors. The talk covered the range of attacks being carried out and examined the attacker motivation, effectiveness, and how tradecraft varies by geographical origin.

They revealed that of the world’s top 25 news organisations, 21 had been targeted by state spying.

The presentation was covered in Reuters, The Guardian, Business Week, CNET, and BBC.
