The op-ed is based on a new Canada-Asia Agenda entitled “Extending Censorship Controls in Southeast Asia” published by the Asia Pacific Foundation of Canada. See the publication here.

“Many Southeast Asian countries have extended the controls they exercise offline on speech to the realm of cyberspace by actively censoring, blocking or filtering online content. Often this is done under the guise of national security, social cohesion or cultural sensitivity.”
