Position Summary
The Citizen Lab is an interdisciplinary laboratory based at the Munk School of Global Affairs at the University of Toronto, Canada focusing on advanced research and development at the intersection of digital media, global security, and human rights. Our mission is to undertake advanced research and engage in development that monitors, analyses, and impacts the exercise of political power in cyberspace. We undertake this mission through collaborative partnerships with leading edge research centers, organizations, and individuals around the world, and through a pioneering “fusion” methodology that combines technical reconnaissance, field investigations, and data mining, analysis, and visualization. The Citizen Lab’s ongoing research network includes the Information Warfare Monitor, and the OpenNet Initiative.
Under the direction of the Citizen Lab Director and the Citizen Lab Research Manager, the Research Assistant is responsible for carrying out a range of research support and administrative tasks. Key responsibilities include: providing research assistance for Citizen Lab research projects including the Information Warfare Monitor and OpenNet Initiative, editorial assistance on written outputs, and maintenance of research project Web site postings and occasional blog postings.
This opening is for a full-time position based out of the Munk School of Global Affairs, University of Toronto.
Education
Minimum BA in Political Science, International Relations, Sociology or related discipline
Experience and Skill Requirements
-Excellent written and oral communication skills
-Strong academic background in social sciences
-Strong research skills (literature review, document analysis, Internet research, etc).
-Superior problem solving and analytical ability
-Demonstrated ability to work well as a team member and independently
-Demonstrated sensitivity to organizational priorities
-Ability to multitask and thrive in a challenging dynamic environment
-Proficiency in social science research methods (qualitative / qualitative) an asset
-Language skills in Mandarin, Russian, or Farsi an asset
